Der World War Z ist für mich gerade vorbei. Ob die Menschheit gewinnt oder untergeht, werde ich nicht verraten. Wohl aber, dass der Film leider nicht so toll geworden ist, wie der Trailer es versprochen hat.
Obwohl die panischen Massenszen an den Originalschauplätze optisch eindruckvoll sind, bleibt die Darstellung eines weltweiten Konfliktes seltsam blass. Was vielleicht daran liegt, dass der Fokus der Geschichte auf der Spurensuche nach einem Gegenmittel liegt und anderen Aspekte darüber vernachlässigt werden. Zudem die übrig gebliebene Geschichte nicht verbergen kann, dass sie zwischendurch mehrfach umgeschrieben wurde. Und so werden insbesondere gegen Ende Erzählstränge aufgebaut, aber dann plötzlich sang- und klanglos fallgelassen.
Dennoch hat der Film seine Momente: Nämlich immer dann, wenn er sich auf die Tugenden des Zombiefilm besinnt und seine Figuren dem seelenlosen Terror der Untoten aussetzt. Schade nur, dass diesem Schrecken Figuren ausgesetzt werden, die der Zuschauer kaum kennt. So fehlt der zwischenmenschliche Faktor, der sowohl Zombie- als auch Epidemie-Film erst mitreißend macht. Brad Pitt, der den Film ganz passabel über weite Strecken allein trägt, ist leider zu sehr "the sexiest man alive" denn ein sterbliches, menschliches Wesen, mit dem man mitfiebern und mit leiden kann.
The World War Z is just over for me. Whether humanity wins or goes down, I will not tell. But I don't deny that the film is unfortunately not as neat as the trailer promised it would be. Although the huge panic crowd scenes at the original locations are visually impressive, the representation of a global conflict still remains strangely shallow. Perhaps it's because the focus of the story lies on the trail of finding a cure and so other aspects are neglected. Furthermore the remaining story can not hide the fact that it was rewritten multiple times. And so especially towards the end storylines are established, but suddenly droped without a whimper.
Nevertheless, the film has its moments: namely, whenever he reflects on the virtues of the zombie film and exposes its characters to the mindless terror of the undead. Too bad that this terror is exposed onto characters the audience hardly knows. Thus, the interpersonal factor that makes both zombies and epidemic movies thrilling is missing. Brad Pitt, who carries the movie over long distances alone and quite competent, is unfortunately too much "the sexiest man alive" then a mortal, human being, with whom you can cheer and suffer with.
